How to Coordinate A
Practice Group or
Empathy Circle

Would you like a support system for your NVC practice and learning?
Wouldn't it be great to be a part of an NVC community in *your* neighborhood?

  • NO Experience Necessary
  • You do NOT have to attend each and every week
  • Group members take turns "facilitating" the group (there is no "leader", per se, we all share)
  • Weekly Content is provided FOR you in Lucy Leu's workbook or on our page on "Empathy Circles"
  • Instruction for the week's volunteer facilitator/leader is provided FOR you in Lucy Leu's workbook.

WHEN?
Ideally, groups meet once per week -- the first 8 weeks as an empathy circle, the following 12 weeks as a practice group.  After these 20 weeks, the group can decide together where the members want to go next!

WHAT?
For practice groups:
We suggest using Lucy Leu's workbook, which corresponds (chapter by chapter) to Marshall's book. To order Lucy Leu's workbook or Marshal Rosenberg's NVC book, you can call (toll free) 866-4-BAYNVC.

For empathy circles, the structure is quite simple.  Click here for a description

Groups can be as few as 1 person with a workbook, 2 in an empathy circle, or as many as you can handle!  To connect with others in your area who are wanting a group, follow the HOW steps, below.

HOW?
What is your next step?  Simply:

  • Decide on a DAY and TIME slot (meetings generally go 2.5 - 3 hours)
  • Establish a location for the group to convene (at least for 2 weeks; group members can then help find a location)
  • Decide if you will promote the group yourself, or if you'd like support to promote it.  For support, email gail@integratedcoaches.com .

As the group unfolds, from week to week simply:

  • Hold the communication &  energy for the group to continue (1 hour per week in emails or phone calls to the group to confirm the next week's location and to hold energy for the group to continue)
  • Ask for help if you or the group is needing support!

Other services I can offer you include:

  • Answering questions you may have
  • Supporting you through challenges that may arise
  • Providing occasional trainer support to help deepen the group's skills and understanding
  • Providing ongoing advanced supplements for your group meetings

Distinguishing
Practice Groups from
Empathy Circles

  • Empathy Circles
    • WHAT:  Giving and receiving deliberate weekly empathic support
    • INTENTION: To connect with the deepest feelings and needs in ourselves and each other, to practice slowing down each moment so as to fully allow us to BE, deeply, with the feelings and needs that are alive in the now.
    • HOW: The structure is quite simple:
--- A few quiet moments for centering and breathing
--- Brief check-ins to determine who needs / will receive empathy this week
--- One speaker begins, and may speak their mind freely
--- The group reflects the speaker through guesses at the his or her feelings & needs in the moment.
---  Empathy continues until the speaker feels complete, or at a place where they're willing to pass the speaker baton to the next person.
    • WHEN:  Ideally, at least 8 weeks of empathy-circle practice precede a practice group.
    • PRE-REQUISITES: One NVC intro workshop, or having completed reading of Marshall Rosenberg's book, through Ch.7.
    • HELPFUL TOOLS: NVC Feelings & Needs double-sided sheet. (you need Adobe Acrobat to read or print it, you can download Acrobat free if you click here.)
  • Practice Groups
    • WHAT: Weekly practice in the form of drills and study from the workbook or printed materials from NVC trainers.
    • INTENTION: To strengthen our NVC skills and mastery, to practice living within the NVC model as we deepen our NVC awareness and abilities.
    • HOW: Practice groups are most often based on Lucy Leu's workbook, which corresponds (chapter by chapter) to Marshall's book.  Groups that have completed the workbook may choose to begin the workbook again, or to continue study using materials from NVC retreats, trainings, or intermediate/advanced workshops.
    • WHEN:  Ideally, practice groups begin after at least 8 weeks of empathy-circle practice.
    • PRE-REQUISITES:  One NVC weekend workshop, or willingness to participate with the group in completing Marshall's book.
    • HELPFUL TOOLS: Marshall Rosenberg's book, Lucy Leu's workbook.  To order them, you can call (toll free) 866-4-BAYNVC.
